HEATING AND COOLING
- Seal any interior cracks with caulk.
- Ensure windows are tightly closed.
- Apply weatherstripping or rope caulk to drafty windows.
- Regularly service your heating system (once a year for oil, every two years for natural gas).
- Replace filters on warm air systems.
- Install a programmable thermostat.
- Cover windows with plastic sheeting.
- Use weatherstripping or door sweeps on drafty doors.
- Install gaskets and foam insulation on wall outlets and light switch plates.
- Close the fireplace flue when not in use or use a chimney balloon.
- Use fans for cooling instead of air conditioning.
- If you have central air conditioning, keep the thermostat set to 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
HOT WATER
- Save hot water by running full loads and using cold water when you can.
- Keep your hot water system efficient by insulating the pipes and electric heater.
- Cut down on hot water usage by using high-efficiency showerheads and faucet aerators.
- Lower your hot water heater temperature to 120 degrees, but remember to turn off the electricity first.
- Prevent water waste and save energy by fixing any leaks promptly.
APPLIANCES & LIGHTING
- Power down appliances and lights when they are not being used.
- Utilize advanced power strips to reduce energy usage.
- Opt for ENERGY STAR certified appliances when shopping for new ones as they are designed to be more energy-efficient.
- Unplug secondary refrigerators when they are not required.
- Upgrade your lighting to ENERGY STAR certified CFL or LED light bulbs.
- Incorporate motion sensor lighting for outdoor use.
